She was born in Jacksonville, Florida to Joel Freeman Avant and Emma Clements Avant on December 2, 1920. The family moved to Miami while she was an infant and shortly after, they lost her father and she was raised by her mother and grandmother. Just prior to the outbreak of World War II, and her graduation from business school, she was hired by Pan American Airways as a secretary. |
In February of 1943 she married Robert A. Roberts who was flying with the Air Transport Command with Pan American. After the war they were assigned to California and later to Connecticut in the aircraft industry, before returning to Miami. By 1949 they had been blessed with two children, Kenneth and Douglas. In 1955 they were assigned to live in Istanbul, Turkey where a daughter, Janet, was born in 1957. In 1958 they returned to Miami and lived there until 1964 at which time they were assigned to Tehran, Iran for 12 years. On their return to the U.S., they lived in New York for three years and then back to Miami for three years and then moved to Inverness in 1983. |
She was a member of the Citrus County Historical Society and the Womens Circle of the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness. |
All three children are married and there are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren scattered throughout the U.S. Margaret had been married to Robert for 67 years with a very loving family. Everyone who knew Margaret knew her love of a story, her love of intelligent, informed conversation, and her quick dry wit. She loved her family and friends. |
